If you’ve ever done any sailing you’ll know you can’t go straight into the wind. Business is much the same.
You might know where you want to head with business, but you can never quite get there…the unplanned happens and before you know it you’ve taken off in another direction.
Alternatively, you might know what you want, but don’t quite know how to get there. The current economic winds can make business a bit of a guess at times. Here’s some sailing tips to help get you to where you need to be:
Even if you can’t head exactly where you want to go, keep moving. If you overshoot your target you can always circle back and have another run with it. By keeping moving you build momentum. Momentum creates further opportunities for you.
You don’t want to end up dead in the water.
Make it up
I picked up wind surfing last summer. I had a couple of quick lessons, bought a cheap second hand windsurfer on Trademe and took it from there. Not knowing exactly what to do made it tricky, but with experimentation I slowly made progress. As with business, the key to windsurfing for me was reflection and working through the things that were making me fall off.
Even when you’re making progress towards where you want to be, you need to keep tacking (that means changing direction for you landlubbers). Are the things that have made you successful the same things which will take you to the next level? What do you need to change to make you more successful than you are now?
If you’re able to keep moving, experiment and try new things, and then keep changing tack, you’ll be better placed to execute your business strategy. Keep making the adjustments you need to make and you’ll slowly get there.
