Perils of the cloud

Hamish Mexted Odds & Ends, Xero & Addons

One of the perils of running a Chartered Accounting business in the cloud is power cuts (which we’re currently experiencing). Often used by people as a reason for not switching to the cloud, without proper planning a power cut can be the death of an afternoon’s productivity level.

For us, proper planning means having decent laptops with great battery life (thanks Sony!) and a mobile 3G connection. This means we’re up and running again within seconds of the power going down. Because we’ve got a paperless office (no mean feat for chartered accountants), being online is critical, with planning for outages being just as important. Today’s power cut tested our response, and we’re pretty happy with how it went.

Be it power cuts, earthquakes or flooding, it’s important to plan your response. If you haven’t planned, you’re not going to know what to do. This will result in reduced productivity, causing you to leave money on the table.
